This competition to be “Europe’s fastest trail runner” was a great success.  Sporting activities in the great outdoors are a natural winner. The new sport involves scampering cross country over hill and dale, on paths and across fields and meadows. Trail running is a major trend and, not surprisingly, it has become one of the key themes of the European trade show OutDoor.  It makes sense that outdoor enthusiasts are going to want durable, protective yet flexible and comfortable clothing.

Outdoor clothing is now about much more than simply fulfilling the functional criteria of sportswear: it is also increasingly gaining ground in urban everyday life and setting fashion trends in all areas. At OutDoor, the textile section took up over 50 percent of the exhibition space. That means over 40,000 sqm of floor space are textile-related and the clothing on display was amazing!

Halloween is a big time of year around the world, where kids take the entire day to dress up and head out in the evening for spooks, fun and candy.  There are some tricks to choosing the right costumes however because not all costumes are safe.  The most important issue since kids are heading out in the dusk and nighttime hours is to stay visible and the best way to do that, and enjoy the festivities, is to use reflective tape.  Here are some tips to work reflective tape and reflective clothing or accessories into Halloween costumes this year.

Some tips to use reflective tape for your kids costumes

Help Kids Understand The Need for Visibility – Before you do anything else, you should take the time to talk to kids about the important of visibility and why things like reflective tape are necessary.  Every year walkers, runners and pedestrians are injured by motor vehicles due to visibility issues.  The kids might not jive with the idea of a bunch of reflective tape on their costume so you may have to compromise and come up with some other reflective accessories

Keep Social Issues in Mind – While you want children to be visible you don’t want to turn them into a social outcast by wrapping them from head to toe in reflective tape.  Costume manufacturers need to keep the same thing in mind.  Subtle accessories can offer the most benefit.  Children don’t need the same kind of 360 degree visibility at 1500 feet like a highway worker but they do need to be visible.  Keep this in mind when designing costumers or accenting the ones you bought.

Make Sure Costumes Fit – visibility is important but so is making sure you have a costume that fits well.  If you have trails or fabric that drags it can be easy to step on it and trip.  No one wants to ruin their Halloween with an injury.  Likewise, clothing that doesn’t fit well cam sag, overlap and obscure reflective tape that would normally keep a child visible.  If a costume doesn’t fit then give it a quick hem job to hold it in place for a few hours.

Trick out Your Props – Sew on reflective tape is ideal for costumes but the instant-adhesive kind works well for extra props.  If you can add tape or other reflective accessories to a costume and the props then you can make them think they look stylish in the night – when all you’re really doing is beefing up their visibility.

Every Halloween costume, no matter how simple or elaborate, should have either reflective tape or light up features incorporated into it.  These items, such as the reflective tape, should be visible from almost every angle.  Also remember that if it gets cold and kids are wearing jackets that the jacket will need some kind of reflective tape or accessory as well.

Some runners find that their only available time to run is going to be at night or in the early morning hours.  In both situations you’re running with very low light or no sunlight at all.  If you’re running, even at dusk, it’s important to make sure that you stay visible to avoid accident or injury.   There are a number of ways to improve visibility, with reflective tape or reflective vests being the most popular.  You can also have custom reflective gear made or purchase a number of products to help you remain visible.  Here’s a list of some of the more common reflective accessories that outdoor enthusiasts can rely on to stay safe.

Different Reflective Accessories

Full Reflective Vests – With high visibility fabric and reflective piping, trim or tape the reflective vest allows you to stay completely visible from just about any angle.   With the right design you can get 360 degree visibility.  In addition to staying visible, many designs of reflective vest are meant to be wind and moisture resistant while remaining breathable to offer maximum comfort to a runner.

Simple Reflective Vests – Simple reflective vests offer less visibility but can offer the same coverage from the front and back thanks to strategically places reflective trim.  When you’re running on the side of the road, a simple reflective vest with large reflective strips can help you stay visible as far away as a thousand feet in clear weather.  Like many other safety and high-visibility vests, most simple reflective vests are fashioned from breathable mesh material.

Reflective Hats - The temperature is often low at night and the early morning hours.  Depending on the season a hat might be a necessity.  If you’re wearing one then take the opportunity to improve your visibility.  Some hats are designed with reflective piping or trim however you can always purchase reflective trim or tape to have it added into a product line (as a manufacturer) or just do it yourself if you want to improve a hat you wear.

Compression Vests – Sports enthusiasts and runners often prefer things that are a bit more snug.  When a vest is billowing and blowing around it can be fairly uncomfortable.  Several lines of reflective vest are available that fit snuggly to the body, following curves and contours.  A compression vest does just that while being covered in reflective tape/trim that offers you 360 degree visibility with maximum visibility – without sacrificing comfort.

Hat Lights - Some runners prefer to maximize their visibility with a headlamp or LED’s.  You can buy hats on the market that come with a fixed LED lamp that turns on and off with a simple switch.  Combine this light with the reflective coating of the baseball cap and you have a recipe for increased night-time visibility as well as safety.

We have written so many articles on visibility and safety, while reporting on accidents that we’ve read about around the world.  The majority of these could have been avoided through better use of safety gear, high visibility clothing and sew on reflective tape.

Since we’re constantly striving to promote safety both in leisure activities and in the professional work spaces, we sent our best to the Euro Bike Show.  Michael along with Tina Gatterman (our Loxy rep from Germany) attending the Euro Bike Show from August 29^th to September 1^st in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

There was a lot going on at the bike show, but of course since we’re in the textile industry our reps had to get their eyes on the Euro Bike Fashion Show.  It’s the ultimate catwalk for bike wear and outdoor enthusiasts (To say the least.

Cycling is in, safety is in, and that’s why the right style is also in demand when it comes to safety and outdoor wear.  The Fashion Show at the 2012 Euro Bike convention demonstrated what is cool to wear now and what will be cool for the next season.

The E-Buzz

Pedelecs and e-bikes were getting a lot of attention at the show this year and soaked up a lot of the spotlight.  These are a great way to get more people into riding that want a hybrid between a bike and a motorcycle.  What added to the buzz  was the test tracks that were available all around the conference.  Having the manufacturers present, with test models and riding tracks, was the best way for the industry to do a direct comparison between not only bikes but the fashion and high-visibility clothing that should be considered with distance and comfort riding.

Given the attention and people new to riding that will be taking up this outdoor activity, Loxy thought it proper to attend and promote the benefits of including seam sealing tape, elastic reflective tape and sew on reflective tape – along with reflective piping and accessories.
